The GIFT Summer Bootcamp 2024 successfully concluded after three days of intensive learning, collaboration, and scientific exchange, bringing together researchers, public health professionals, clinicians, faculty members, and graduate students from 12 countries.
Jointly organized by Ilia State University and Yale University through the GIFT Program and supported by the Fogarty International Center, National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Bootcamp welcomed 76 participants and featured 19 distinguished speakers, including 11 faculty members from Yale University, together with experts from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Ilia State University, and other leading institutions.
Over the course of 40 hours of training, participants explored contemporary approaches to implementation science and biostatistics, combining theoretical foundations with practical application. The program covered implementation science frameworks, implementation strategies, study design, methodological and statistical considerations, qualitative and mixed-methods research, implementation facilitation, and dissemination strategies. Participants also engaged in interactive “Ask the Experts” consultation sessions, where they discussed their own research projects with Yale faculty and implementation science experts.
A major highlight of the Bootcamp was the series of real-world implementation science case studies, featuring experiences from HIV care, tuberculosis, hepatitis C elimination, syringe vending machine implementation, and health system responses to COVID-19 and humanitarian crises. These sessions demonstrated how implementation science can be applied to address complex public health challenges in diverse settings.
On the final day, participants selected between two specialised educational tracks. The Biostatistics Track provided hands-on training in R and RStudio, introducing sample size estimation, complex study designs, and missing data methods, while the Implementation Science Track focused on implementation facilitation, NIATx strategies, grant and manuscript writing, economic evaluation, and literature review methods.
The Bootcamp concluded with a certificate ceremony, during which participants who successfully completed the training received joint certificates from Ilia State University and Yale University in recognition of their active participation and achievement.
To extend the impact of the Bootcamp beyond the event itself, all presentation slides and training materials have been made freely available through the GIFT website, supporting continued learning and capacity building for researchers, students, and public health professionals across the region.
